Review 3: CG built in Films

Find an example of green screen technology in a motion picture. Analyze how the green screen technology enhances the film.



Here's an image from The Hobbit in which Gandalf is supposed to be interacting with Bilbo and the party of dwarves. Since dwarves and Hobbits are very short, they filmed them all together and then filmed Ian Mckellen in this green screen version of Bilbo's house. This allowed them to overlay Gandalf on top of the original shot as seen below.



This is one of many ways of making Gandalf appear much larger than the actors, keeping the movie's reality consistent without any sign of tampering. Without it, we'd be wondering why these supposed dwarves look so similar to the Wizard, or why Gandalf is so short.
